VERNON, NY, September 23, 2010 - Real Gentleman generated a career-best 1:51.1 effort to capture the second division of Thursday night’s $26,800 New York-bred late-closing contest for 3-year-old male pacers at Vernon Downs.
With Jimmy Whittemore doing the driving for trainer Eric Abbatiello, Real Gentleman ($2.80) Real Gentleman raced in front throughout the mile, defeating Aribica by ¾-of-a-length in the seventh race, lowering his previous record by one second and coming within 2/5ths-of-a-second of Vernon’s all-time standard for sophomore geldings on the lateral gait.
It marked the eighth win in 19 starts for the bay son of Artiscape-Polite Hanover, who is shared in ownership by Jeffrey Pocaro, Paul Stromick and the Allister Stables LLC. This is the first season of competition for the winner of $112,664.
Breezefromthewest, Josh Marks driving for trainer Tracy Brainard and owner Hubert Wick, took the opening division with a late surging, 1:52.1 performance in the fourth event. The time is a win-mark for the bay son of Pro Bono Best-Queen Of The West, who has posted five victories this year and six lifetime.
Brainard’s Semjac Legacy (Marks drivng) secured her third straight score and ninth of 2010 with a 1:52 tally in Thursday’s $10,000 eighth event, the week’s top Miracle Mile test for female pacers. The time was just 4/5ths-of-a-second off the track mark for 4-year-old pacing mares.
Marks, the meet’s leading reinsman, chalked up four wins during the 11-race program, including a 1:58.3 victory with Brainard’s Fox Valley Majesty that made him the winningest trotter at the 67-program meeting with seven first-place finishes.
Whittemore, the track’s defending driving champ, also chalked up a pair of winners during the evening.
